Create a new image in Photoshop by using: File/New (make sure the color is set to None). The first thing we are going to do is make a Scan Line pattern. Create the new file 2 pixels by 4 pixels. It is tiny to start but zoom way in. Then pick the Pencil tool and color the top 2 pixels black. Go under Edit/Define Pattern and name your pattern. Then pick any image, create a new layer (make sure it is transparent) and go under Edit/Fill and pick your scan line pattern.

Below I put up the same picture with scan lines and without. Click on them to see the difference.

The next little tutorial we are going to do is a simple grid. The background of this text box is the same simple grid that I am going to show you how to make. Create a new image be going under File/New. Make the new image 20 x 20 and fill it with your desired background color by going under Edit/Fill or using your paint bucket tool. Next pick the pencil tool and create lines one the top and along the left side. Then you can put another line 11 pixels down going across and 11 pixels over going down. It should look like the image below.

These two basic ideas can be used over and over again to spice up your images. However, be careful because these little things should be add-ons and not too overpowering.
